This web page quizzes you on the Japanese hiragana and katakana syllabaries. A random character is picked from the respective standard syllabary, including voiced and semi-voiced characters (but not small / double hiragana, the character Q, or the long vowel mark), and displayed. You must then choose the phoneme that represents the character shown.

Note that the phoeneme may differ from its pronunciation. The following table shows these differences:

Phoneme Pronunciation Hiragana Katakana
si shi
ti chi
su tsu
wi i
we e
wo o

Right and wrong answers are tallied and a percentage is displayed at the bottom of the page. This may be distracting and you can turn it off by clicking the up arrow near the bottom. To display it again, click the down arrow.

If you are not sure what the answer is, you can click the Cheat button to discover its phoneme, or the Listen button to hear it spoken. If you do this, and choose the correct answer, your score will not increase. However, if you choose the wrong one, your incorrect tally will increase.

You may turn off the quiz mode by checking Audio Mode near the bottom of the page. Doing so and clicking any of the phonemes will play the pronunciation of that phoneme aloud. Your score will not be affect while in audio mode. To return to quiz mode, uncheck the box.

If you want to use this locally, you can get it here (285k). You will need something like WinRAR to unpack it.
